METHODOLOGY The law firms included in our research were based on a revenue-ranked league table published by Legal Insider (The Insider UK 200 2014 v1.6 - available for download in XLS format from http://www.legaltechnology.com/top-200). The sources of this publication include, but are not limited to, The Lawyer 200 Annual Report, The Insider, Legal IT Insider and the vendors/firms themselves. Legal Insider stipulate that all data are subject to change. The primary data regarding insights and Twitter activity were collected between January and July 2014. All ‘yearly’ data are extrapolated estimates from this 7 month period. Our data on law firms’ website insights should further be treated as estimates, due the element of arbitrariness in distinguishing between legal-specific insights and non-legal company ‘news’. The number of all Twitter users' followers tends to oscillate, thus all relevant data are subject to change. Data regarding tweets per time unit were calculated using Tweetails™ (http://www.tweetails.com), which uses the time intervals between a user’s last 3200 tweets to calculate an average tweets per day statistic. Where users had < 3200 tweets, fewer tweets were used to calculate said average (a minimum of 10 tweets was required). Furthermore, some law firms hold numerous Twitter accounts for different departments and personnel. In this instance, data was only collected from the law firms’ principal account. For those without a Twitter or account or with a private Twitter account, there was no data to collect and so they rank at the bottom. The gather the knowledge pieces data, we went through every website for the top 200 firms. A knowledge piece is an insight, blog, article or any other piece that demonstrates knowledge and expertise by someone at the firm. News items have not been counted as part of this number. Some firms have “aggregated” content or “paid-for” content. We have tried where possible to recognise and discount this content but it is not always easy to distinguish from content.
